By the end of this unit, the students will be able to:
- Relate how the periodic Law can be used to predict the physical and chemical properties of the elements.
- Explain the relationship of an element's position on the periodic table to its atomic number. (3.1)
- Use the periodic table to identify metals, nonmetals, metalloids, families (groups), periods, and valence electrons. (3.1 & 3.2)
- Relate the position of an element on the periodic table to its electron configuration and compare its reactivity with other elements in the table. (3.3)
- Identify trends on the periodic table (ionization energy, electronegativity, and relative size of atoms and ions). (3.4)
