Matter, Energy, and Change

Objective Sheet

By the end of the chapter the students will be able to:

1 – Identify, explain, and distinguish between physical and chemical properties that are used to classify / describe matter, given examples of both types and defend your choices (1.1).

2 – Distinguish between chemical and physical changes (1.1).   Give examples of both.

3 – Distinguish between pure substances and mixtures on the particle level (1.2).

4 – Classify mixtures as heterogeneous or homogeneous (1.2).

5 – Describe the three states of matter (on the particle level) in terms of energy, particles motion, state transitions, (1.3, 6.3) and entropy (6.5).

6 – Draw models to represent solid, liquid and gases on a particle level.  Defend your models.

7 – Explain the relationship between energy transfer and disorder in the universe. (6.5)

8 – Distinguish among kinetic, potential, and other forms of energy.

9 – Create and label an original diagram illustrating the transfer of energy from one form to another, consisting of at least 5 conversions.  Defend your diagram as to why it fulfills the requirements.

10 – Differentiate changes as endothermic or exothermic, given examples. (6.4)

11 – Interpret the law of conservation of energy (6.4).
