Introduction to Chemistry 

By the end of this unit, the students will be able to: 

1 – Implement the proper study techniques to succeed in Chemistry, through the proper organization of the class notebook, to be evaluated using the notebook rubric. 

2 – Apply the lab safety rules as outline in the handout on a lab safety quiz, demonstrating mastery with a minimum of an 90%, and throughout the year.   

3 – Develop skills necessary to manipulate lab. equipment properly during a variety of lab activities throughout the year.  The skills include but are not limited to the proper use of a Bunsen burner, centigram balance, and graduated cylinders.  These skills will be evaluated through the lab skills practical portion of the Unit 1 evaluation and throughout the year. 

4 –  Design a simple experiment as outlined below to solve a problem: 

A – make observations, pose questions, and form hypotheses. 

B – write a valid purpose, select materials, equipment, and conditions, identify independent and dependent variables, write clear procedures, use equipment properly, and follow safety guidelines. 

C – present data in charts and graphs, use mathematical operations to analyze and interpret the data, identify reasons for inconsistencies, develop conclusions, and state questions that are raised for further investigation. 

D – review information, explain statistical analysis, summarize data, explain diagrams and charts, use appropriate technology to present findings, and use scientific models. 

7 – Differentiate a theory from a law, to be assessed during the Unit 1 evaluation. 

8 - Explain how chemistry is an important part of their life in a short 5 paragraph essay to be evaluated using the school's writing rubric.
