Specifics Regarding Lab

I believe that Chemistry should be as hands on as possible. As a result, you will participate in a number of activities. The rules for these occasions are outlined below.

1 - You must pass the Lab Safety Quiz with a 90% . You will NOT be allowed to participate in any lab activities that are potentially dangerous until you do so. The make up policy still applies in this situation.

2 - A prelab discussion will occur the two days prior to the activity. If you are absent for this discussion, it is POSSIBLE that you will not be allowed to participate in the lab activity.

3 - I will give prelab quizzes the day before the lab.  You must pass the quiz in order to participate in lab the next day.  It will have procedural and safety related questions.  If you do not pass the quiz you will have the opportunity to retake a similar quiz that afternoon or the day of the lab PRIOR to your lab block.  It is your responsibility to be prepared.  IF you do not pass the lab quiz the second time, you will be required to stay after on the following Tuesday to make up the lab AFTER taking yet another prelab quiz.

4 - You must have appropriate footwear to participate in lab. If you don't - you will not be allowed to participate in the lab and will receive a zero for the activity.  You are to have your shoes with you prior to coming to class.  You may not leave the room after the bell to get your shoes.  Bring them with you.

5 - You are to wear the safety googles and apron during lab.  If you don't - you will be removed from the lab and you will receive a zero for the activity. Repeated offenses will result in a referral to administration and parent/guardian. You will not be allowed to return to the lab until I speak with a parent/guardian.

6 - You must conduct the activity in a safe manner, using the materials and equipment properly. If you are misbehaving, you will be removed from the lab, receive a zero for the activity, and will be required to write a letter home to a parent/guardian explaining why you were removed from the lab. I will also inform the administration of your behavior. There are too many of you doing dangerous activities for ANYONE to misbehave.

5 - You must clean up your lab area properly. You will return your equipment back to your station in the same manner you got it. I will clear you to sit down. You are responsible for maintaining your lab station and washing your equipment.

6 - If you use the safety equipment in an incorrect manner, you will be removed from the lab area.  The administration and your parent /guardian will be contacted.

7 - Lab reports that are illegible or unorganized will receive a zero.

Lab reports will vary in point value depending on the nature of the assignment. Every lab report will include a conduct/participation component. A rubric for this will be distributed.  Simply being in the lab area does NOT count as participating.

It is your responsibility to have a copy of the observations/data collected during your lab activity. All members of the team MUST have them before leaving the room.

It is to be understood that every night after a lab your homework is to analyze the data and try to write a conclusion.  If you can’t write a conclusion then write down the questions that you had and bring them to class.

If you finish the activity before the bell, begin the analysis back at your seat. You are to be on task even when you “finish” the lab. Once the majority of you are finished I will provide post-lab assistance as needed.
